Having a pet can be the same as having another member of the family. When building or decorating your home you must think of everyone who will live there and not just the humans. As much as we love and cherish our pets, they can present challenges to any living situation. Dogs and cats especially have certain needs that must be taken into consideration.
1. CHECK FOR HAZARDS
The first step is to inspect for potential dangers. Medications and cleaning products for example should be stored up high or in cabinets that are securely closed. Get on your hands and knees and scan your living space at your pet’s level. It may seem silly, but seeing what they see can be beneficial in identifying issues you might overlook.
2. GIVE THEM A SPACE OF THEIR OWN
Pets need some down time just like anyone else. Give them an area to seek refuge when they want to sleep or just relax. Try to include a pet bed if space allows. Choose a corner that is quiet, out of direct sunlight, and in a section of the house that you won’t mind getting dirty or hairy. Make sure to place a water and food bowl nearby. Your pet will associate peace and happiness with this particular place.
3. GROOM WELL AND BATHE OFTEN
Grooming and bathing your pet thoroughly and regularly will save cleaning time and reduce any destruction to your home. If you have a dog, brush him or her frequently to prevent shedding. Research grooming and bathing guidelines for your particular pet and stick to a schedule. A clean animal will not transfer dirt to carpets, upholstery and bedding. Additionally, keeping their toenails short will keep furniture and floor scratching to a minimum.
4. CONSIDER THE SIZE OF YOUR YARD
Most dogs and cats are eager to get outside and roam around your yard. When you’re choosing which lot to build or buy a home on, consider the size of the yard in comparison to the size of your pet. If you have a larger pet you may want to look for a lot with a big yard.
Some advice for pet owners is to learn as you go, be flexible, and appreciate the joy and energy a pet brings to your household. We would love to help you create the perfect home for you and your pets! Contact the Jordahl Custom Homes sales team at 701-234-0404 or email@example.com.
